Writing & Journaling Prompts
Write a letter to your loved one.
Write a letter to your loved one. Tell them what you miss. Ask them questions. Explain what you are feeling. Create a song or poem for them.
Do this often; when you are sad, angry or happy!
Write a letter to God, the Universe or a higher power
Explain what you are thinking. What are you worried about? What fears do you have? Do you have gratitude or peace? Are you angry or have questions? Tell it all.
You can choose to keep this letter(s) or take it outside and burn it or you can bury it.
Use a Feeling Wheel
Search for a feeling or emotion wheel. Choose a feeling you have or an emotion you are experiencing. Write a letter to it. ex: Hey anger, or Dear Sadness.
Find a definition of the emotion. Is this how this feels in your mind and body?
Are you experiencing more than one emotion at the same time (anger and sadness or joy and grief)?
What emotion are you struggling to express right now?
How is grief affecting me?
How is grief affecting me:
Spiritually?
Physically?
Emotionally?
Mentally?
Financially?
Choose a song
Think about a song that you listen to over and over. Maybe it is a trigger and makes you cry. Maybe it is glimmer and it makes you smile. Maybe it is both!
Look up the lyrics and write about the lines that mean something to you.
What is the connection to your loved one? Is it your song? Is it one that was popular when they passed away? Is it something you wish you could hear them sing to you? Is it something you wish you could say?
How is grief affecting my relationships?
*not all of these may apply to you and your situation
How is grief affecting my relationships with:
my children?
my friends?
my co-workers?
my faith community?
my parents?
my siblings?
my in-laws?
Reflecting on Guilt
Do you feel guilty when you have a good day?
Do you feel that you should be grieving differently?
Do you feel guilty not talking about your grief more?
Do you have moments or days when you don’t think about your loved one?
*All of these feelings are valid. Your journey through grieving is your own journey. There are no rules to follow, no timelines, no directions of how to do it.
I am afraid…
What are your fears and worries?
Being alone?
Grief in others?
Finances?
Moving Forward?
Who you are now?
Others?
