Healing
Use different journal prompts and techniques to process grief and loss, peace and joy.
Some of the prompts may trigger deep emotions. Assure that you will have enough time to write and reflect.
I did a lot of my healing and coping with the loss of my husband through journaling, letters to him, creating poetry, and writing a memoir.
I feel…
I am afraid…
I will add more…
Things that make me smile…
Describe the perfect day with a loved one
Describe the perfect day for yourself
Think about traditions you no longer need and new ones you can start. Maybe they are things you did before your life with this person. Maybe it is a way to honor the person who is gone.
Write about events they will miss this year.
Describe a time that it was hard to get out of bed or go to an activity and how you were able to do it.
Write a letter addressed to a condition or disease, like cancer. Pretend it is someone you could have a conversation with. What would you say? What do you feel?
What are you afraid of because of the loss of a loved one?
Describe a memory from your childhood that you wish you could re-create either to experience it again or make changes.
Have you felt abandoned? By who? Is this true?
Do you feel you need to determine your self-worth or is it innate?
Write about each word commonly associated with grieving: anger, depression, acceptance, bargaining, denial, guilt, shock, and denial
Write about the difference between grief and grieving. Grief is the collection of feelings like sorrow, anger, jealousy, and nostalgia associated with loss. Grieving is the process of exploring feelings and adjusting to life without the person or thing you have lost.
Write a letter to the person you have lost. Share what you are feeling. Tell them what you want them to hear. Allow yourself to feel any emotions that come up.
Write a list of things you are grateful for getting to experience and learn during your time with your loved one.
Find and copy the lyrics to a song you connect with your loved one. Reflect on the meaning of the words. Write about the reason this is “their” or “your” song.
